Monthly Watch List: January 2013

Posted by on Jan 4, 2013 in Monthly Watch Lists | Comments Off

After a couple month hiatus, the Monthly Watch List column is back up and running again! I apologize for that, but I’m sure you all knew what you were interested in with so many good movies that came out in November and December. As for January 2013, only a few films are really worth seeking out in theaters, as is the case with most Januaries. Nonetheless, there are several films I’m sure many of you missed in December and can see in January, especially in order to catch up before the Golden Globes and Oscars (look out for my predictions post in the coming month). Happy new year!

[MWL Purpose: Not all of the following movies are highly anticipated or worth a viewing at all, let alone in theaters.  Still, the purpose of these monthly watch lists is to present what is available and offer a conclusion on whether or not to see the film, usually based on the filmmakers’ pedigrees and current consensus about it.  Also important to note while reading or skimming the list is that not all the movies will be released in a theater near you on the mentioned date; take note of the “Limited” label.]

Monthly Watch List: September 2012

Posted by on Sep 2, 2012 in Monthly Watch Lists | Comments Off

The 2012 summer movie season has come to an end, and the transition to awards bait films has begun.  A few leftover wannabe blockbusters and genre pieces will hit theaters this month, giving audiences enough amusement.  But what will define September and the coming couple months is the early critical hits that could launch an Oscar campaign.  In particular, enigmatic, elusive but extraordinary Kubrickian director Paul Thomas Anderson releases his next masterpiece (no pun intended) The Master.  Also, early reviewers have highly praised Rian Johnson’s (who made the highly entertaining and fresh modern-day noir film Brick) newest movie Looper, a unique sci-fi action film.  Furthermore, September sees a number of Sundance Film Festival graduates seeing limited and widespread releases.  It may not be packed with highly anticipated films and will seem like a middling transitionary month by the end of the year, but audiences will still have plenty to watch and enjoy, or even love.  Read on to see what’s worth seeing in theaters, on demand/renting, on TV or not at all.

Monthly Watch List: August 2012

Posted by on Aug 2, 2012 in Monthly Watch Lists | Comments Off

August may not feature any can’t wait/must-see films as May, June and July, but it certainly presents a number of interesting choices, albeit many of which are limited.  August 2012’s list has a large number of Sundance limited releases, many of which I didn’t see while at this year’s Festival but are still possibly worth checking out.  Despite the lack of major hype-inducing releases, several Highly Anticipated Films find their way into theaters this month.  As far as Augusts go, this isn’t a terrible way to bridge the dog days of summer duds and sleepers with awards-worthy films in September on.  Read on to see what’s worth checking out or skipping this month, and also check out previous Monthly Watch List entries for possible limited releases expanding into more theaters (or simply see The Dark Knight Rises for the nth time).

Monthly Watch List: July 2012

Posted by on Jul 2, 2012 in Monthly Watch Lists | 0 comments

July 2012 doesn’t feature as many Highly Anticipated Films as I expected.  Then again, The Dark Knight Rises more than makes up for the lack in quantity with what should be plenty of quality.  2012’s most anticipated film finally hits theaters on July 20; it should be an exhilarating conclusion.  Apart from Nolan’s third Batman film, July 2012 features a few other high potential films and a number of maybes, but not a ton to get hyped about.  Look out for some limited releases finding their ways into wider markets this month (see June 2012 Watch List for previous releases still in theaters), or get out and see films you missed earlier this summer!  Read on to see what’s worth checking out or avoiding.

Also don’t forget to vote for your most anticipated film of the month at the bottom of the post!!!

SUMMER AT LAST! June 2012 is full of some promising films, with 13 of my Highly Anticipated Films premiering this month. The clear front-runner of th

e month is Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, which could very well turn out to be in the top 3 films of the summer (alongside The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers). Yet, there are a number of great indie films starting their limited releases this month as well, including several Sundance entries like Grand Jury Prize winner Beasts of the Southern Wild and screenwriting winner Safety Not Guaranteed. Indeed, audiences will have plenty to watch this month – read on to see what’s worth checking out or avoiding!

Monthly Watch List: May 2012

At last, the beginning of summer at the movie theater! There are a number of limited releases I omitted from this watch list, since they didn’t appear to be worth mentioning as something audiences will see in theaters, if at all.  On the other hand, the month is practically packed with Highly Anticipated Films.  It should be a solid beginning to a wonderful summer at the movies.

Monthly Watch List: April 2012

Posted by on Apr 1, 2012 in Monthly Watch Lists | Comments Off

April 2012 features a mediocre list of new releases.  Only a few of my Highly Anticipated Films will be released.  Apparently there will be a pre-summer lull at the box-office, but still you should be able to find a few movies you’ll want to see this month.  Read on to see what’s coming out and whether or not it’s worth seeing in theaters or at all.

Monthly Watch List: March 2012

Posted by on Mar 1, 2012 in Monthly Watch Lists | Comments Off

We’re almost out of the late winter lull at the movies.  Not all new releases in this time frame are bad, but few are genuinely entertaining, major surprises, or big-time blockbusters.  However, March 2012 has a few Highly Anticipated Films, such as one of the year’s most anticipated blockbusters The Hunger Games.  Though the month isn’t bursting with excitement, each week has something you might want to see at the theaters.  Read on to find out what is worth checking out in theaters or watching at all!

Monthly Watch List: February 2012

Posted by on Jan 31, 2012 in Monthly Watch Lists | Comments Off

February is usually a slow month in terms of cinema.  It often includes genre films dumped by studios thinking they wouldn’t garner much box-office appeal in the prime summer months.  February 2012 seems no different.  Only a few are highly anticipated; it might be a good time to catch up on films you’ve missed in the past month or so, such as limited releases getting wider markets.  Also, February 26th is the Academy Awards ceremony that will reveal 2011’s best films, though more snubs occurred this time than usual.  Still, for anyone with a passion for film should tune in.  Have a great month and keep an eye out for numerous Sundance reviews coming soon!

Monthly Watch List: January 2012

Posted by on Dec 31, 2011 in Monthly Watch Lists | Comments Off

January is typically full of a mixed group of releases, from the critically acclaimed limited releases seeing wider audiences to the mediocre-to-awful genre films studios dump; January 2012 is no different.  Some of the new releases seem entertaining but not a lot more than that.  Only a few are really worth looking forward to.  The most anticipated releases of the month are mainly ones initially released in December that will roll out to more theaters in January.   Occasionally a few January releases will become sleeper hits, though.  Have a great month and keep an eye out for my end of 2011 features, such as my top ten films and trailers lists as well as awards predictions. (This list will be updated on a case by case basis, adding other possible releases and/or editing descriptions).
